![]() Cavalry, Infantry, Artillery! Nine big guns and over 350 re-enactors have pre-registered to participate in Civil War Days 2009 in Lamoni, Iowa on Saturday, September 5th and Sunday, September 6th of Labor Day Weekend. The event offers free admission, free parking, and fun for every member of the family. In addition to our two re-enacted battles, this year, we are adding a special feature called a live-fire mortar competition. Yes, you read it correctly! And, for the second year in a row, a PBS film crew will shoot footage for an upcoming television special! After the battles, tour the "town square" to shop in the sutleries (general stores in tents) or watch the various tradespeople demonstrate just how things were done in the 1860's. Watch the blacksmith and tinsmith creating their wares. See how paper and candles were made or watch spinning, rug weaving or antique rope making. Then, quench your thirst with Doc's Old Fashioned Root Beer fresh from the tap and taste hard tack or cider cake made from authentic 19th Century recipes. Do not leave without touring the Union and Confederate camps, talking to the troops, petting the cavalry horses and sitting with these living historians to learn first hand what life was like for the Civil War soldier. See a fashion show of mid-19th century clothing and listen to musicians play tunes of the era. Civil War Days is a living history presentation with fun and enjoyment for every member of the family. Many handmade goods and reproduction items are available for purchase along with Amish crafts and 1860's period toys and games for children. In addition, various local antique stores and other downtown shops and galleries offer event specials for festival goers. Visit historic Liberty Hall, home of Joseph Smith III. This Victorian Mansion is completely furnished with items from the period and boasts an authentic replica one-room schoolhouse on its sprawling grounds. Finally, the day will not be complete until you visit with an authentic North American Indian family. These living historians present an American Indian impression that is both true to their traditional values and that honors and maintains those values. Look for their magnificent teepees at the encampment near the 'town square.' Civil War Days is undertaken each year in the spirit of fun and to honor the memories of those who went before us and shaped the course of our history. Come and join us for a walk through time on Saturday, September 5th from 10am to 10pm with a battle at 3pm, and on Sunday, September 6th from noon to 5pm, with a battle at 1pm.
